Photography
The Keepers of Light: A History and Working Guide to Early Photographic Processes This is arguably the best book available on alternative photographic processes. Sadly it is currently out of print, but there should be a used copy available at a good price.
coverHistoric Photographic Processes An excellent overview and practical introduction to several historical photographic processes.cover
coverPrimitive Photography : A Guide to Making Cameras, Lenses, and Calotypes This book discusses every aspect of making a photograph from scratch: constructing the camera and film holders, choosing and mounting lenses, and making the paper negative and print. Very detailed. Highly recommended if you are in to old processes.cover
coverThe Beginner's Guide to Pinhole Photography This is a great introduction to pinhole photography. Basic design, pinhole making, and darkroom procedure discussed. If you require something more advanced:cover
coverPinhole Photography An excellent source of pinhole history and theory for the serious enthusiast.cover
Microscopy
coverExploring With the Microscope: A Book of Discovery & Learning Why is this book out of print?!? This is one of the best introductions available to using a microscope, suitable for everyone from 8 and up. And for whatever reason it has recently gone out of print! If it comes back into print, or if someone lists a used copy at a reasonable price, I recommend that you pick it up.cover
coverGuide to Microlife This is a "field guide" of sorts to microlife. It is a broad overview, and isn't intended to get the observer down to genus or species level, but you will be able to recognize most of the organisms squirming under your lens.cover
coverIf you want a more thorough system fo classifying your microlife, I suggest How to Know the Protozoa (Pictured Key Nature Series). This can get you as close as genus for many protozoa. Another very thorough guide with lots of color photos is Free-living Freshwater Protozoa: A Color Guide.
Astronomy
coverAmateur Astronomer's Handbook A good general introduction to the tecnical side of telescopy.

cover
cover Sky Atlas 2000.0, 2nd Deluxe Edition An excellent atlas of the night sky for the small to medium telescope. Of course astronomers defend their favorite atlases, so equal billing to the excellent Norton's Star Atlas and Reference Handbook, 20th Edition, a beautiful work.
coverTurn Left at Orion: A Hundred Night Sky Objects to See in a Small Telescope--and How to Find Them A very useful book that will really aid the amateur astronomer in locating a myriad of objects.cover
coverThe Backyard Astronomer's Guide Arguably the best guide to choosing and using astronomical equipment. Buy this book before you buy the telescope.cover
coverAstrophotography for the Amateur The best introduction available to astrophotography.

cover
coverNightwatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe A wonderful introduction to astronomy. Highly recommended.cover
coverBurnham's Celestial Handbook: An Observer's Guide to the Universe Beyond the Solar System (Volume 1) An indespensable catalog of the objects visible in the night sky. Also available are Volume 2 and Volume 3.
coverThe Stars : A New Way to See Them and Find the Constellations by H. A. Rey. Don't dismiss these too fast as "kids books" - they are nicely done, simple introductions to astronomy suitable for the casual observer or young astronomer. Written by H. A. Rey, who brought us Curious George!
